SHOCK as a Kisumu Boda Boda rider takes his own life in his brother’s house over phone theft allegation

Wednesday, July 2, 2025 - Nyando residents in Kisumu County are reeling in shock after a boda boda rider reportedly took his own life after being accused of stealing a passenger's mobile phone.

Samuel Okal, the rider at the centre of the allegations, is said to have taken his own life on Tuesday night.

According to authorities, he used his jacket to hang himself in his brother’s house.

Kochogo South Assistant Chief, Eveline Obuon, confirmed the incident, stating that Okal had ferried a female passenger from a funeral event over the weekend to Ahero town.

The woman later claimed that her phone went missing and pointed fingers at Okal.

The accusation quickly spread among fellow boda boda riders, some of whom confronted Okal at his home.

Chief Obuon noted that the deceased vehemently denied the claim, insisting he was innocent.

She added that Okal appeared visibly distressed in the days following the accusation, and it is believed that the emotional toll may have driven him to take his own life.

The police have since taken his body to Othoo Funeral Home as investigations into the incident continue.
