- The Tanzanian Parliament has quietly removed the educational backgrounds of
its Members of Parliament (MPs) from the official parliamentary website,
following intense online backlash from Kenyans.
The move is seen as an attempt to contain further
embarrassment after a diplomatic and digital spat erupted between the two
countries.
The row began after Tanzanian lawmakers, during a heated
parliamentary session on May 26th, accused Kenyan activists of
meddling in Tanzania’s internal affairs.
MPs Joseph Kasheku Musukuma and Jesca Msambatavangu mocked
Kenya’s political maturity and dismissed the concerns over the deportation of
activists Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire.
In response, Kenyans scoured the Tanzanian Parliament’s
website, uncovering questionable academic records of some MPs.
Musukuma, for instance, was shown to have completed only
primary education.
Another MP, Tauhida Cassian, reportedly spent over 15 years
in secondary school before earning a diploma.
The findings sparked ridicule across Kenya’s social media,
with netizens flooding Tanzanian MPs’ WhatsApp numbers and public platforms.
In what appears to be damage control, Parliament has now
removed all educational details from MPs’ profiles.
Sources say the step was aimed at shielding legislators from
further public scrutiny.
