Thursday, March 20, 2025 - Former Nyandarua Governor Daniel Waithaka Mwangi has been sentenced to two years in prison or a Ksh 1 million fine after being found guilty of procurement irregularities and abuse of office.
The Nyahururu Anti-Corruption Court delivered the
ruling on Thursday, March 20th, with Chief Magistrate Hezekiah Keago
sentencing Waithaka to two years or a Ksh500,000 fine for failing to
comply with procurement laws and another two years or Ksh500,000 for abuse of office.
The sentences will run concurrently if he fails to pay the
fine.
The former Governor was convicted alongside Grace
Wanjiru Gitonga, the former County Executive Committee Member
for Water, Energy, Environment, and Natural Resources.
Gitonga was sentenced to two years or a Ksh500,000 fine
for engaging in a project without prior planning and another two
years or Ksh500,000 for procurement violations.
The duo’s conviction stems from an April
30, 2014 scandal where they unlawfully procured
an engineering consulting firm without a procurement plan for
the 2013/2014
financial year.
The contract involved developing a County
Water Master Plan and reviewing the Ol Kalou
Town Sewerage System without following due process.
Waithaka now joins a growing list of former Governors
convicted of graft.
He follows Moses Lenolkulaal (Samburu) and
Ferdinand
Waititu (Kiambu),
the latter having been sentenced last month to 12 years in prison or a Ksh53.5
million fine for irregular tender awards.
