Tuesday, March 11, 2025 - Security agencies in Limuru intercepted 80 donkey carcasses being transported to Burma Market on Monday after the animals were slaughtered in the bushes under unhygienic conditions.
The meat, likely contaminated, was carried in dirty used
sacks, posing a serious public health risk, including the potential spread of
zoonotic diseases.
Authorities have raised concerns over the dwindling donkey
population, linking the illegal slaughter to the booming trade in donkey skins
smuggled to China.
Calls have been made to Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe and Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke to gazette the African Union ban on the donkey skin trade, which is believed to be fuelling the illicit donkey meat market.
