Monday, February 17, 2025 - Some unidentified gunmen were captured on camera crossing into Elwak municipality in Mandera South Constituency from the neighbouring Somalia, causing panic among the residents.
The gunmen were casually walking in Elwak in broad-daylight,
exposing the security lapse in the Kenya-Somalia border.
This comes after President William Ruto scrapped the
60-year-old vetting requirement that mandated residents of Northern Kenya, near
Somalia border, to appear before a special security panel for questioning
to verify their Kenyan nationality before being issued a national
identification card.
Ruto signed the executive order during a tour of the northern
region, calling the vetting practice unjust.
He told a gathering that the process deprived Kenyans of
minority tribes living near the Kenya-Somalia border of their rights.
“We want the people of northern Kenya to feel equal to the
rest of the country,” Ruto said during the signing of the order in Wajir
County.
