Wednesday, January 08, 2025 - Tottenham have extended Heung-Min Son's contract to keep him at the club until June 2026.
The South Korea forward and club captain's deal was due to
expire in June, meaning Spurs were at risk of losing him on a free transfer at
the end of a decade-long spell in north London since signing from Bayer
Leverkusen in 2015.
Barcelona were one of a number of clubs rumoured to be
looking at signing him this summer, but the 32-year-old will now remain at
Tottenham for at least another year.
"We are delighted to announce that we have exercised
the option to extend Heung-Min Son's contract, which will now run until the
summer of 2026," read a statement on Tottenham's website.
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou also expressed his delight at
the news, telling the press ahead of his side's Carabao Cup semi-final
first-leg tie against Liverpool that the aim is to ensure Son wins a trophy at
Spurs.
"He's already had an outstanding career at this
football club," Postecoglou said.
“He's played a big role in the last ten years, making an
impact at the club and in the Premier League. It's great to extend his stay.
The aim and ambition is to make sure he finishes his Tottenham career with some
silverware.”
Son has long-since been the top-scoring Asian player in
Premier League history and is the third-top scorer of players still active in
the competition, behind only Jamie Vardy and Mo Salah.
Son has scored 169 goals in 431 appearances for Spurs in all
competitions.
